Panama Friendly™ Mosquito Program
Oxitec has launched a new phase of its malaria program in the Americas, establishing a team in Panama to prepare for future pilots of Friendly™ mosquitoes to combat the region’s dominant malaria-spreading mosquito.
In Panama, malaria transmission continues to threaten lives in many rural areas. The region’s most important malaria-carrying mosquito, Anopheles albimanus, is difficult to control, due to increasing resistance to insecticides and conventional vector control methods. New solutions are urgently needed to combat this mosquito.
During the first project phase, Oxitec is conducting early field studies to inform how the Friendly™ Anopheles albimanus solution, currently in development, can deliver impact in malaria-threatened Panamanian communities.
Field studies commenced in early 2023, with an initial field surveillance phase to study the population dynamics, breeding behaviour and dispersal of Anopheles albimanus mosquitoes in rural Panama.
